Mini Transat Test Race 1 with Isard Mini Transat 1.0 at Saint Aubrey in 2024 – 2024/04/14

Olivia, Yariel, Lucy, Kris, Moon, Kelly, Monika, Wol and Ella came yesterday to our first Mini Transat Test Race in 2024 with the Mini Transat 1.0 on our course St AR – MT650 – 1 with wind from North and 21 knots. The wind variants were light with shifts +-5°, gusts 10% and a cycle time of 120sec.
The conditions of the sims were quite average and got a laggy when the LCC joined the area.
Yariel got disconnected once, came back and finished. Kris got the wrong wind and stopped the race after we noticed it. Sorry Kris it was my fault, because i thought i checked all boats at the start, but i must have read your wind wrong.

The music comes today from:
video 1: Bob Marley & The Wailers – Stir It Up
video 2: UB40 – Bring Me Your Cup
video 3: Bob Marley & The Wailers – Punky Reggae Party

course: St AR - MT650 - 1 with wind North and 21 knots

The start and the first leg looked already like an exciting race and makes really curious for the next races while the sailors will improve more and more.
You can see the differences during the turns with the handling and the timing of adjusting the boat settings for the new leg. This boat has only some thin spray lines when it is foiling and much more spray when it is fully in the water. This is a very good indicator to see the differences and explains a bit the different speeds of the boats. The more you foil, the faster you are and the more ahead you will be
The fleet spread out already a lot on the upwind legs to buoy AN via buoy ON and then i needed nearly the full speed on my board to fly between the sailors.
The story of the race is quite easily told. After Kris stopped her race because of the wrong wind Kelly took the lead and extended it more and more. Yariel and Ella followed her until Yariel got disconnected later and fell back. Monika won the duel with Wol. Yariel could keep the lead against Olivia after her disconnect. Lucy and Moon followed a lot later.
Sorry that i missed the finishes of Kelly and Ella, while i was flying around.
After the first racers came back from Degrand Island the LCC cruise crossed the race area. The good work of Kitten at the cruise briefing paid off and the cruisers let the racers pass very fair. They were only complaining a bit about much more lag. But that is normal with so many boats in the same area.
So big thank to Kitten for her briefing and an applause for the behavior of the LCC cruisers.
I don’t think i can say much more about the race itself and i think the result of the first test race isn’t really that important. I am sure it was more important that all had fun, enjoyed the course, the race and meeting here and some of the other racers on the course. Please just enjoy the videos and if you will watch them after the next races as well i am sure you will notice the improvements of all.

  1. Much yet to learn… 😉 My fault as I’ve made only two practice laps. Anyway Moon is so green with this boat as myself so we’ve met many times during the course. For sure it is a fun boat even if complex.

    1. Thank you very much for your video Lucy. It helps me to much to give you some tips to try next times:

      1. lower only the leeward foil and raise the windward foil, but never sail with both lowered.
      2. the Avi hikes only one position to every side, but that is only for the better and logical look. The hike command is for the keel mainly and that has the middle position and 5 positions to each side. So move the keel as much as you need to get the boat flat (Heel=—). Then the foil works best.
      3. the traveler has 3 positions T=0 (awa 30° and lower), T=1 (awa 31° to 40°= and T=2 (awa above 41°)

You will see if you manage those 3 things better you need more tape to keep your hat on your head. More tips after the next race video…

  2. Well what a race! First of all I was delighted to see a god turn out and a god crowd to come see the new boat in action.

I had a poor start but i was excited to see that even with bots around on larger sails, if I was sailing “just right” i could thread my path. Im glad to see a more realistic wind shadow so there is no longer a huge “airwall” holding me back. I still had to be careful to avoid it and it was useful to use it to gain positions but its no longer as powerful as in “other” boats.

So i managed to reach 2nd place and was comfortable there until I came into contact with the LCC cruise. Now they didnt hit or directly interfere with me but i suddenly lost connection the moment they came into view.

I scrambled back but I was lost… I had no navigation points. I could not orientate where i was and for some reason the boat acted weird for the first 30 seconds as i could not get any speed out of it. I tried in vane to just follow a racer so could orientate myself and get wind compass back in operation but with so many LCC around me, I could not see who was a racer and who was a cruiser so I lost vital seconds or even minutes here. I did eventually get sailing at speed again and managed to finish but even though i suffered with this disconnection thoroughly enjoyed the race and cant wait for race 2 !! here is my video.. I hope you enjoy as much as i did racing,

      1. great video as well Esme, but you need to check more, if you have the right traveler position and the the right keel position for the flat boat. The S.factor at 2.0 is normally ok, but if not made with the optimal input of all parameters (T, Keel, sheet angle) it will become a bit unstable and then you loose speed.

  3. interesting.. i will talk to you later in more detail on this. I mostly go by sound.. there is a slight change in the howl if you get it right.. of course that might just be me and i have no idea hahah
